Most business and gaming monitors have a DisplayPort input. Most current laptops have USB-C and little else. The gap between those two facts is usually filled with an adapter, a second cable and a connection that drops out whenever the desk gets bumped.

Honest limitations — read this before you buy

The cable depends on your USB-C port supporting DisplayPort Alt Mode. USB-C ports built for data and charging only cannot output video, and no cable will change that; this is far and away the most common reason a USB-C video cable appears not to work. Check your laptop’s port specification — manufacturers list it as “USB-C with DisplayPort” or “DP Alt Mode”. Most phones do not support it.

The cable also runs one way: from a USB-C source to a DisplayPort display. It will not feed a DisplayPort output into a USB-C screen, and it does not connect to a mini DisplayPort socket without an adapter. Reaching 4K@60Hz needs your laptop and your monitor to both support it as well.

Will this work with my laptop?

It will if your laptop’s USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. Most recent MacBook, Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS and Surface laptops do — the specification usually says “USB-C with DisplayPort” or “DP Alt Mode”. If the port is listed as data and charging only, it cannot output video and this cable will not produce a picture.

Does it fit a mini DisplayPort monitor?

No. This cable has a full-size DisplayPort connector at the monitor end. A mini DisplayPort input would need an adapter.

Can I use it from a DisplayPort computer into a USB-C monitor?

No. The cable is directional — USB-C source to DisplayPort display. It does not work in reverse.

Should I use DisplayPort or HDMI for my monitor?

If your monitor has both, DisplayPort is generally the better choice for a computer and leaves the HDMI input free for a console or another device. On a dual-screen desk, many people run one monitor over DisplayPort with this cable and the second over HDMI with our USB-C to HDMI cable.
