Honest limitations — read this before you buy

This cable only works if your USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. A USB-C port that is wired for data and charging only cannot output video, and no cable can change that — this is the single most common reason a USB-C to HDMI cable “does not work”. Check your laptop or tablet’s port specification first; many budget laptops and most phones do not support it.

The cable is also directional: it runs from a USB-C source to an HDMI display. It will not send an HDMI source, such as a camera or console, into a USB-C screen or capture device. And as always, 4K@60Hz requires your laptop and your monitor to both support it — on a 1080p screen the cable simply runs at 1080p.

One cable, nothing to configure

How do I know if my laptop will work with this cable?

Your laptop’s USB-C port needs to support DisplayPort Alt Mode. Most recent MacBook, Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS and Surface laptops do, and manufacturers usually note it in the port specification as “USB-C with DisplayPort” or “DP Alt Mode”. If the port is listed as data and charging only, video output will not work through it.

Will it work with my iPhone or Android phone?

Most phones do not support DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB-C, so in general no. Check your phone model’s specification for DisplayPort Alt Mode or “video out” before ordering.

Can I run it the other way, from an HDMI device into a USB-C screen?

No. The cable is directional: USB-C source to HDMI display. It will not take an HDMI output from a camera, console or set-top box into a USB-C port or capture device.

Will I get 4K at 60Hz?

The cable supports up to 4K@60Hz. Whether you see it depends on your laptop and your monitor — both need to support 4K@60Hz as well. On a 1080p display the cable runs at 1080p.

Do I need to install anything?
